Fiorentino is the main dialect of the city of Florence and the surrounding areas. It's part of the Tuscan dialect and is very similar to modern Italian. In fact, many linguists and scholars of Dante, Boccaccio, Petrarch thinks that modern italian is "the modern Florentine." Its vocabulary and its pronunciation is almost identical to Italian, but the "c" hard, when it is between two vowels (as in the Cat), is pronounced like an "h" in English.

At the time of unification of Italy was chosen as the language used by putting an end to centuries of debate, which had also participated Dante (in De vulgari Eloquentia) Dante which saw two major factions, one supporting the creation of an Italian on the basis of a dialect and another that was to create a new language that takes the best from the different dialects.
