surroundings of siena and empoli: A journey to discover the Tuscan countryside, to be held in one or more days. Departure is from Florence in Monteriggioni direction, a splendid fortified village in the province of Siena. Entering the port Romea Franca, which was originally equipped with a heavy gate, we go through Piazza Roma, the heart of the village. The square originally was unpaved, but it was paved in the'60s. Today the square is surrounded by gardens and orchards, very important in the past to allow the survival of the population in case of siege.

Next stop is San Gimignano , the town of towers, situated 25km from Monteriggioni in north-west direction, then we reach Certaldo , which is a must-visit to the upper town, perfectly preserved, dominated by Palazzo Pretorio and crossed Boccaccio Street, in honor of the famous poet that was born here.

Before returning to Florence, the last stop is San Miniato , whose historic medieval center is definitely worth a visit. Beautiful places are Rocca di Federico II and Palazzo del Seminario.
