Loggia del Mercato Nuovo e Fontana del Porcellino

Piazza del Mercato Nuovo (New Market Square) is located in the city center, within walking distance of Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza della Signoria . The square is famous for the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo, built around 1550 for sellers of silk and precious objects. There currently are sellers of leather goods and souvenirs. In the margins of the square is the famous Piggy Fountain (which is why the square is often called in colloquial Square Porcellino), a bronze sculpture depicting a wild boar. According to tradition, touching the nose of the animal brings good fortune, and therefore is much more polished than the rest of the statue.
