Il Ponte Vecchio

Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge), which crosses the Arno River in its narrowest point, is a symbol of the city, and is one of most famous bridge in the world. The history of the bridge is very old: in fact about thousand years ago there was a wooden bridge, while the stone bridge was built later, and it was repeatedly destroyed by invaders and floods. Currently the bridge is home of jewelry shops, and is part of the Vasari Corridor, a route designed and built by Giorgio Vasari in 1565, in order to put in communication the city hall (Palazzo Vecchio) with the residence of the Medici family (Palazzo Pitti).
